Case Study: Extension
This was built as a freestanding structure, of larger size than the existing timber framed house. The old and the new were then joined together by a link, which contains the new main staircase.
Notable design features include:
- A glass sided balcony, cantilevered out from the first floor bedroom.
- A roof which consists of principal oak rafters tied with stainless steel cabling and tensioners.
- Structural glass balustrading to internal galleries and staircase, and a glass block wall above door frame level between bedroom and gallery.
- Rainwater drainage via stainless steel chains into open channels set into the external paving. The water flows into a stream beside the house; a recirculation pump can be activated to provide a continuous flow of water through the channels in fine weather.
This building won South Norfolk Council’s design award competition ‘in recognition of it’s design excellence and contribution to the enhancement of the environment’.
